Concert Attire

Hi guys!

This is an update regarding the attire for concert.

SYF group: SYF attire

Non-SYF:

GIRLS - black formal pants (non shiny), black blouse (w short sleeves), black court shoes.

BOYS - black formal pants, black long sleeve shirt, black long socks (no ankle socks allowed), black court shoes. (no ties are required)

For those of u who do not want to buy any of the above mentioned items. Please go and borrow.

For the girls, we will be purchasing 2-3 sizes of the G2000 blouses by Wed and u guys can try n see which sizes fit. We will be taking orders for the blouses on Wed. For those who do not want to buy the blouse, u can use ur own blouse but the blouse is due for checking on Wed, 18 May. The blouse costs $49.90.

You guys will have to buy all the other items besides the blouse by yourself.

Please take note that there will be no changing of attire for the ensemble pieces. i.e. J1s in the SYF group will be slightly different from those J1s who are not in SYF. Similarly J2s who are not in SYF will be slightly different from those in SYF.

Congratulations to us for getting a silver awards this SYF.

next up will be the guitar concert in AJC on 26th May. Lets put up a great performance for ourselves and for everyone who comes to watch it!

For the J1s, Exco interviews will continue next Tuesday 3rd May during practice hours. We will continue to work on the two concert pieces the next practice.

Job Scope for EXCO positions

President

 Overall in charge of the committee and the ensemble

 To head planning for all events

 To draw up a work plan for the next 13 months in office

 Chair committee meetings, delegate tasks to committee members, ensure

that the committee is always achieving high quality work and are good role

models.

 To identify areas of concern and to solve administrative, logistical and social

problems in consultation with teachers and instructors where necessary

 Disseminate information and updates from instructor, CCA office or

teachers

 Develop a culture where important values and upheld (Respect, Discipline,

Punctuality, Enthusiasm, Dedication, Perseverance, Passion)

 To be liaison between the ensemble, the teachers, CCA office and instructor

 To be a firm, compassionate, reasonable and understanding leader

 To realize the potential in every committee member

 Always ensure that the ensemble bonds well and that no one is left out

Treasurer

 To maintain and monitor the ensemble fund, petty cash and all monetary matters

 To ensure that the funds are properly used for appropriate purposes

 To collect funds when they are due on a regular basis ($1 to $2 per month)

 Provide a half-yearly statement of accounts and transactions to the

committee, instructor and teachers

Secretary

 To take minutes for every meeting in a standard format

 To distribute the minutes of meeting before the next meeting

 To monitor the attendance of ensemble members

 To bring to the attention of the teachers, instructor and the committee

about people with frequent absenteeism

 Collect MCs/parents’ letter from members and hand it to the teachers or

the President

 Take note of ensemble member’s punctuality

 Issues warning to those who are always late

Quarter Master

 To be take care of all property of the guitar ensemble

 To ensure that instruments are properly labeled and issued

 Let teachers/instructor/CCA office know immediately if any equipment is

damaged and requires repair

 To ensure that the store props room is neat

 Ensure that all members place their instruments in the correct slots

 Let teachers/instructor/CCA office know if there is any shortage of

equipments

 Issue warning to anyone who fails to take care of the instrument or

misplace it and withdraw instrument from student if necessary

 Ensure that members are allocated guitars

 Ensure that there are sufficient supplies of spare guitar strings at all times

 Ensure that members know how to take care of their instrument

 To instruct new members when doing an annual string changing session

 To supervise regular and frequent cleaning of instruments

 To print out a checklist each time the ensemble has to bring instruments

and equipment out of the school for performances

 To make sure that all equipment is accounted for during external

performances

 To remind members of their responsibility to help in the logistic needs

Librarian

 Responsible for photocopying parts

details associated with the development of a newsletter.

Job Scopes for Musical Leaders

Student Conductor

 Assist the instructor and conducts practice whenever instructor is not around

 In-charge of the progress of all sectional leaders

 To sit in auditions and to provide feedback to instructor plan)

 Be critical with ensemble playing; give comments to ensemble on how they

can further improve (eg. Do not rush at bars 20-21)

 Feedback to instructor after you have conducted a practice

 Review on what you have done with the ensemble, check if it is effective. If

it is not effective, approach instructor for more ideas/approach.

 Always be one of the best players in the ensemble

 Conduct warm ups like scale practice, RH strumming exercises and LH

exercises

 Train up assistant student conductors in conducting warm ups

 Need to identify and recommend students who have potential for music

leadership

 Conduct at performances where the conductor is not present

 Conduct selected pieces of music during concerts as directed by the conductor

 Form and supervise the chamber groups, trios, duets, quartets

Concert Master

 To be concerned with all things musical

 To ensure that sectionals are conducted effectively and efficiently  Responsible for planning music repertoire for the year with section leaders

and instructor

 Supervise all sectional leaders and feedback to instructor on the musical

standard of the ensemble

 Responsible for every detail of any performance (mics, stage crew, seating

 Ensure that ensemble is ready for practice by arranging ensemble arrangement

Section Leaders

 Are responsible for the progress of their section and should always be ahead of your member

 Conduct and lead in sectionals, showing them how to practice

 Motivate section members to play well

 Be critical of your section playing and always give comments to your members on how they can improve their playing. If you encounter any problems, approach the instructor

 Keep scores for any absentees

 Take charge of section tuner and stands, ensure that equipment are

brought back to the store room after practice and that room used for

sectionals is cleared

 Maintain good discipline in your section

 Knowing their parts very well and are able to play it as an example for their

sections (with correct posture, articulation and phrasing)

 Focusing on weak areas during practice, repeat difficult passages and

discover solutions to technical problems (always check with your instructor

if you are unsure)

 Making maximum use of the time that is given to them during sectionals

and to ensure that the whole section comes away with more knowledge

and skill after each sectional

 Keeping written records or journals of your member’s progress and

performance in each sectional, need to provide feedback to the conductor

on a regular basis

 Keep track of attendance of respective section members and to be

accountable for those who are not present (those who are absent are

accountable to report to you of their absence before practice)

 Rehearsing with their sections both technical and musical aspects

 Reporting members who have sustained continuous satisfactory performance to the conductor for potential promotion to a leadership position

 Making sure that members who are lagging behind are given more attention during sectionals or given extra sectionals to catch up with the rest

 To be a firm, patient and caring teacher to the section

and practices for wednesdays will end at 4.30pm instead of 6pm for those in GRM, MB, or BMT. this is because the JC2s teaching you guys need to spend crucial time together to prepare for SYF.

General instructions:

1. On arrival at your respective rooms, please help each other out in setting up the furniture arrangement.

2. Before going off from CCA, please make sure that the room is back in its original state. Meaning all furniture back to its positions, and clear of any rubbish you left behind.

3. Please label your belongings, and put a keychain on your guitar bag to minimize confusion and loss.

Please check the post below for info on the NUS Guitar Ensemble concert. The date to hand in the money by is Tuesday 1 March to Marcus Loh the J1 Ensemble Coordinator.

hi J2 guitarists,
if you haven't shaped your fingernails, at least keep it long. as we get closer to the competition and SYF, tone is important too, and we will have a session to shape the nails. but tone will be perfected after we perfect the playing of the song itself. so please practice and perfect the SYF pieces. reduce buzzing, and keep on time. there is a metronome link at the sidebar if you need it ->

for those who have gone past the stage of trying to perfect the pieces, you can always google and see how to shape your nails. different people do it differently, but as long as it sounds good and is comfortable for you to play with, it should be okay.

Hi all, congrats for us all for surviving promos :D Now that promos' out of the way, it's time for guitar practices to resume (:

IMPORTANT: There will be a practice on Tuesday, 20 October 2009 at 6PM. Those with OP workshops on the day are allowed to come at a later time. Do remember to bring your guitars on this day, and do help to inform and remind other members! ((:

We have a guitar blog! (:

Anyway, some updates for those who weren't able to make it for this week's practices, CCA has resumed as per normal. There is a temperature-taking exercise before every practice, so make sure you do so and report to Zhi Heng.

Another thing to note is the new sectionals arrangement. Instead of the Group 1-6 we used to have last semester with three sections, now we have another six groups which can be divided into either 3 or 4 sections.

The sections are 1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 2.3, 3.3 and 3.4. For songs with 3 sections, we refer to the first number, i.e. sections 1.1 and 1.2 are Guitar 1, 2.2 and 2.3 are Guitar 2 and 3.3 and 3.4 are Guitar 3. For songs with 4 sections, we refer to the second number, i.e. sections 1.1 is Guitar 1, 1.2 and 2.2 are Guitar 2, 2.3 and 3.3 are Guitar 3 and 3.4 is Guitar 4. It may be a bit confusing at first, but it is useful in planning the seating arrangement in the ensemble and allows us to play both 3-sections and 4-sections songs without having to make another arrangement (:

There are also five scores on five new songs. One of the songs actually has two pages, and that one has only three guitars, so do take notice of which section you are in. The rest of the songs have four sections. Anyone without any of the scores do approach Aloysia.

Another thing is about sightreading practices. We are to do two pages on every practices. No worries, the practices are not that complicated. Any problems do approach your SLs or any of the other members!
